Summary
The US onAir Network will be working with volunteers from Alaska universities, colleges, and nonprofit organizations to oversee the curation and moderation of posts, aircasts (online discussions), and in person events for the Alaska onAir Hub … related to federal, state, and local elections and government.
Our first outreach will be to University of Alaska partly because of its proximity to the state capital. We have identified many of University of Alaska’s civic engagement, academic, internship and research programs related to making democracy and civic responsibility a focus of higher learning on their campus … for students, faculty, staff, and local community. This post, over time, will have similar information on other collaborating organizations in the state.
Contact ben.murphy@onair.cc for more information on how to involve your organization.
OnAir Post: Alaska Universities
About
The UAA’s onAir chapter will initially focus on training interested undergrad and graduate students on how to curate Utah onAir content especially submitting Top News articles, events, videos, and information and moderating forums in each post they curate.
Student curators will also work with state senate and house committee chairs to produce aircasts on issues being discussed and bills being proposed in their committees.
During election season, students with other other organizations like the League of Women Voters, will coordinate and produce aircasted debates with candidates.
The UAA onAir chapter will also help to establish other onAir chapters at public and private universities and colleges throughout the state.

Civic Engagement Programs

The Center for Community Engagement & Learning (CCEL) serves as the intersection of student learning, faculty research and creative activity, and community engagement.
Since 2006, UAA has been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching as a “Community Engaged Institution.” CCEL serves as a central locus for the intersection of student learning, faculty research, and community engagement. UAA uses the Carnegie Foundation’s definition of community engagement for our work with communities: “Community Engagement describes the collaboration between institutions of higher education and their larger communities (local, regional/state, national, global) for the mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources in a context of partnership and reciprocity.”

Priorities and Principles
The Union of Students of the University of Alaska Anchorage (USUAA) is recognized by the University of Alaska Board of Regents as the governing body for students enrolled at the University of Alaska Anchorage. As stated in the Constitution, the goals of USUAA are to:
- Broaden the educational perspective of the students by instituting a structure of self‐governance.
- Promote the educational needs, general welfare, and rights of the students.
- Serve as a forum for students to express their ideas for enhancing the quality of their educational experience through expanded and improved communications among students, faculty, administration, and beyond.
- Formulate policy and procedures concerning student life.
- Serve all students equally, in accordance with Board of Regents Policy, federal and state law, prohibiting discrimination against individuals, including but not limited, on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, age, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, veteran status, physical or mental disability, change in marital status, pregnancy, or parenthood.
Strategic Priorities
Preamble to the USUAA Constitution
“We, the members of the Union of Students of the University of Alaska Anchorage, in order to represent student interests, needs, and welfare within the university community; to supplement and complement education on the University of Alaska Anchorage campus; to provide for the expression of student opinion and interests to the community at large; to protect the rights of the students herein stated; and to promote an understanding of the concept of self‐governance, do affirm and establish this Constitution of the Union of Students of the University of Alaska Anchorage.”
To these ends, USUAA has three strategic priorities: service, advocacy, and self-governance.
Internships

Internships
Internships are a great way to integrate classroom learning with practical application and skill development in a professional setting. The experience can assist you in narrowing your interests, developing meaningful relationships with professionals and acquiring real-world skills to support your career.
Find Internship Opportunities
Students of any major seeking internships should start their search in Handshake, the University of Alaska’s career management platform. Job and internship opportunities in a variety of industries and locations, local and national, are posted daily. And, Employers hiring on Handshake are specifically seeking students, or recent graduates from UAA!
Career Services encourages students to take a comprehensive approach when seeking job and internship opportunities. Connect with professors and academic advisors within your academic department, expand your network through participation in clubs, organizations, and events, and develop an online presence (i.e. LinkedIn, Handshake).
Political Science Programs
Source: Department of Political Science
Students come to political science because they are interested in politics: some of them with an eye to a political career, some with a scholarly intent and many wishing to know more about this central, inescapable human concern. The Department of Political Science aims to make all students aware and critical of their first opinions (since human beings are at their most opinionated in politics), to open up the possibilities of politics, to reveal the permanent political problems, to impart an intellectual discipline and to supply a guide for choice.
The Political Science program is divided into five areas: comparative politics, international relations, political philosophy, American politics and political behavior. Majors in political science are required to take at least one course in each of these areas, to specialize in one of them and to complete introductory courses in political science.
The department also offers a minor in political science. Students pursuing the minor take two introductory courses and four additional upper division political science electives.
The department welcomes all students who want to learn more about politics. It reserves its honors for majors who earn qualifying marks both in a senior seminar and on a comprehensive examination.
Research Initiatives
Source: Research
At UAA, we understand the importance of being on the cutting edge of theoretical and applied research in health, engineering, and the physical and social sciences. We value the impact of our undergraduate and graduate researchers, and we create many opportunities for students to work closely with highly qualified faculty in state-of-the-art labs that are built to address some of the Arctic’s most pressing problems. We do this because we firmly believe that the path forward for Alaska and the world will be driven by our students — by your curiosity, passion, and belief in a brighter tomorrow.
